Luke Thurgate is a drawing lecturer from Adelaide Central School of Art and an artist with an active studio practice. Over 12 days in November/December 2018 charcoal was applied by Luke directly to the the walls of Burra Regional Art Gallery to be removed on December 23 with only the photographic documentation and our memories left as a record of this work.
‘The Burra Archive’ is an ephemeral snapshot of the Burra local community and a framework for sharing a sense of place and identity. Items offered to the archive were directly incorporated in to the drawing. Luke is interested in the mnemonic aspect of the subject matter and treated the residence as a kind of real-time research project about Burra residents and their personal and collective histories.
